The study found that these athletes burned six to seven times their basal metabolic rate during multi-day races, equivalent to 7,000 to 8,000 calories a day. However, over longer periods, their calorie burn rates were closer to 2.5 times their basal metabolic rate, indicating a metabolic ceiling.
