Scientists at the University of California, Riverside, have discovered 12 new insect species in Australia, with four of them grouped into a new genus named 'Swiftiephylus,' in homage to pop superstar Taylor Swift and her fanbase. The individual species within
this genus also bear names referencing Swift's work: 'Swiftiephylus taylorae' (after Swift herself), 'Swiftiephylus amator' (referencing her album 'Lover'), 'Swiftiephylus intrepidus' (from 'Fearless'), and 'Swiftiephylus poetorum' (from 'The Tortured Poets Department'). These insects are part of the Miridae family, commonly known as true bugs, and are plant-feeders that primarily inhabit Australian casuarina trees and shrubs. The specimens were originally collected between 1995 and 2004 and have since been studied by researchers, including graduate student Sarah Schroeder, a self-proclaimed Swiftie, who led the naming initiative. The insects are characterized by their pale yellow bodies with red or orange patches, which Schroeder likened to Swift's blonde hair and red lipstick.
