What's Happening?
Chegg, through its platform Internships.com, is recruiting Summer Trip Leaders for LeaderTreks, a program focused on organizing mission trips for youth groups. These paid positions, offering up to $6,000,
are designed for college-aged young adults, post-college graduates, and teachers. The role involves managing mission trip sites, mentoring college interns, coaching student leaders, and facilitating an impactful experience for participating youth groups. Responsibilities include leading nightly Bible studies and team discussions, coordinating service projects and outreach events, and partnering with local ministries. The summer program begins with an all-staff training trip in Chicago at the end of May, followed by deployment to various mission sites throughout June and July. Leaders will facilitate weekly trips for different youth groups, with a debrief experience for all interns and staff at the beginning of August.
Why It's Important?
This initiative is important as it provides significant leadership development and spiritual growth opportunities for young adults, while simultaneously engaging youth across the country in community service and faith-based activities. For the individuals serving as Trip Leaders, the program offers practical experience in teaching, facilitating discussions, coaching, budgeting, planning, and problem-solving. These are valuable skills applicable to various professional fields. For the youth participants, these mission trips foster community engagement, spiritual development, and exposure to different ministries and service projects. The program's emphasis on fundraising for leaders' salaries also introduces participants to the missionary model of support, potentially influencing future career and service choices within faith-based organizations. This type of experiential learning can have a lasting impact on both the leaders and the youth involved, shaping their perspectives on service, leadership, and community responsibility.
What's Next?
Prospective Summer Trip Leaders will undergo an application and selection process, followed by an all-staff training trip in Chicago at the end of May. Following training, leaders will be deployed to their assigned mission sites across the U.S. for June and July, where they will lead weekly youth mission trips. Throughout this period, they will be responsible for all aspects of trip facilitation, including spiritual guidance, logistical coordination, and mentorship of interns and youth. At the beginning of August, all interns and staff will reunite for a debriefing experience. A key component for selected leaders will be fundraising their own salary, up to $6,000, which is framed as a missionary opportunity. This fundraising effort will likely commence shortly after selection and continue leading up to the summer program.
Beyond the Headlines
The LeaderTreks program, facilitated through Chegg's Internships.com, highlights a growing trend of integrating faith-based service opportunities with professional development for young adults. By requiring leaders to fundraise their salaries, the program not only secures financial support but also instills a sense of ownership and commitment akin to traditional missionary work. This model can foster a deeper understanding of non-profit operations and community engagement among participants. Furthermore, the program's focus on developing both 'hard skills' like budgeting and 'soft skills' like adaptability and collaboration, positions these mission trips as valuable resume-building experiences. This blend of spiritual development, community service, and practical skill acquisition reflects a broader societal interest in holistic development programs that prepare young people for diverse roles in a complex world, whether in ministry, non-profits, or other professional sectors.
