What's Happening?
The U.S. Air Force, in collaboration with Lockheed Martin, has successfully tested the X-62A, a modified F-16 aircraft, equipped with an AI-driven system capable of autonomously intercepting airborne targets. The tests, conducted at Edwards Air Force Base,
involved the X-62A using an infrared sensor pod to autonomously track and intercept a T-38 jet trainer. This development is part of the HAVE HEAT program, which aims to enhance autonomous air combat capabilities. The AI system executed 27 successful intercepts across eight flights, showcasing its potential to improve situational awareness and combat efficiency. The program is a significant step towards integrating AI into military aviation, with the goal of developing operational Collaborative Combat Air drones.
