What's Happening?
Vale has inaugurated the Capanema mine in Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, marking a significant investment in sustainable mining practices. The mine will operate using natural moisture, eliminating the need for tailings dams, and will feature five autonomous Caterpillar 789D trucks. This initiative is part of Vale's broader strategy to invest R$67 billion in Minas Gerais by 2030, focusing on reducing carbon emissions and expanding circular mining practices. The mine is expected to contribute approximately 15 Mt/y to Vale's iron ore production, aligning with the company's production goals for 2026. The project involved modernizing facilities and integrating operations with other regional mines, employing 800 people and emphasizing local labor.
Why It's Important?
The inauguration of the Capanema mine represents a shift towards more sustainable and technologically advanced mining operations. By reducing reliance on tailings dams and implementing autonomous vehicles, Vale is addressing environmental concerns and enhancing safety for workers and nearby communities. This move is expected to contribute significantly to the decarbonization of the steel industry, as high-grade pellet feed essential for lower greenhouse gas emissions will be produced. The investment in Minas Gerais is poised to generate substantial economic benefits, including annual royalties and salaries, supporting local economies and employment.
What's Next?
Vale plans to continue modernizing its operational complexes and improving geotechnical management at its mines. The company aims to reduce the use of dams in its operations from 30% to 20% and complete its Upstream Structure Decharacterisation Program. These efforts will enhance safety and sustainability in iron ore production, aligning with societal expectations for responsible mining practices. The focus on circular mining and co-product initiatives, such as Sustainable Sand production, will further support environmental goals and resource efficiency.
