What's Happening?
Orbia Netafim, a precision agriculture business, has partnered with Amazon India to implement drip irrigation systems in agricultural areas near Bengaluru and Hyderabad. The initiative aims to save approximately 325 million liters of water annually by
transitioning farms from traditional flood irrigation to drip irrigation. This method delivers water directly to the plant root zone, reducing evaporation and excess water use. The project will cover 80 hectares in Bengaluru and 40 hectares in Hyderabad, benefiting over 110 independent farms. The initiative aligns with Amazon's goal of becoming water positive in India by 2027, returning more water to communities than it uses in its operations.
Why It's Important?
The partnership between Orbia Netafim and Amazon India addresses critical water scarcity issues in regions like Karnataka and Telangana, where water availability is under pressure. By improving irrigation efficiency, the initiative aims to reduce water consumption while maintaining agricultural productivity. This collaboration not only supports local farmers but also contributes to broader water security efforts. As water scarcity becomes a growing concern globally, such initiatives demonstrate practical solutions that can be replicated in other water-stressed regions, potentially influencing agricultural practices and water management policies worldwide.
