What's Happening?
The La Plata Economic Development Alliance is making strides in addressing workforce housing and child care needs in the region. Executive Director Sarah Tober presented the alliance's 2025 accomplishments to the Durango City Council, highlighting the Regional
Housing Alliance's catalyst fund contributions to two workforce housing projects in Durango. The fund has awarded $75,000 to the Lightner Creek Commons project and $100,000 to the Rivergate Lot 4 and 5 project, supporting the development of below-market housing units. Additionally, the alliance has identified $5.6 million for its Early Childcare Investment Fund, aiming to create 260 new child care slots and increase wages for child care workers.
Why It's Important?
The initiatives by the La Plata Economic Development Alliance address critical needs in the community, particularly in workforce housing and child care. Affordable housing is essential for attracting and retaining a skilled workforce, which is vital for local economic growth. Similarly, accessible and affordable child care supports working families and contributes to a stable and productive workforce. By investing in these areas, the alliance is helping to create a more resilient and sustainable local economy. The success of these programs could serve as a model for other communities facing similar challenges.
What's Next?
The alliance plans to continue its efforts in workforce housing and child care, with the catalyst fund's next round of awards expected to close soon. The Early Childcare Investment Fund will focus on expanding child care capacity and improving wages, with support from various public and private partners. As these initiatives progress, the alliance will likely seek additional funding and partnerships to sustain and expand its impact. The ongoing collaboration with local businesses and government entities will be crucial in achieving long-term success and addressing the region's economic development needs.
