What's Happening?
The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has announced the availability of low-interest federal disaster loans for Indiana small businesses, private nonprofits, and residents impacted by severe storms and flooding on September 17. This declaration
was issued in response to a request made by Gov. Mike Braun on October 21. The disaster declaration covers seven Indiana counties: Adams, Allen, Blackford, Grant, Huntington, Jay, and Wells. Eligible entities in these counties can apply for various types of loans, including business physical disaster loans (up to $2 million for repairs or replacement of assets), home and personal property loans (up to $100,000 for personal property and $500,000 for primary residences). These loans can also cover fixed debts, payroll, and other bills affected by the disaster, with interest rates as low as 3% for homeowners and renters, 4% for businesses, and 3.625% for private nonprofits.
Why It's Important?
The availability of these federal disaster loans is crucial for the recovery and rebuilding efforts in the affected Indiana counties. The low-interest rates and flexible terms, including a 12-month deferment on interest accrual and payments, provide much-needed financial relief to individuals and businesses facing significant losses. This support helps prevent long-term economic hardship, allowing businesses to resume operations, homeowners to repair their residences, and communities to stabilize. The inclusion of loan increases for mitigation purposes encourages resilience against future disasters, promoting safer and more robust infrastructure. By providing this aid, the SBA plays a vital role in supporting economic stability and community well-being in the aftermath of natural disasters, demonstrating a commitment to helping affected areas recover comprehensively.
What's Next?
SBA customer service representatives will be available at a Disaster Loan Outreach Center in Wells County, starting Thursday, to assist applicants with questions and the application process. The center will operate Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon, closing permanently on November 12. The filing deadline for physical property damage applications is December 28, while economic injury applications must be submitted by July 26, 2027. Affected individuals and businesses are encouraged to apply online or visit the outreach center to secure the necessary financial assistance for their recovery efforts. The timely processing of these applications will be critical for the swift rebuilding of homes and businesses in the designated counties.
