The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has reported that 100% of the 15 assessed fish stocks in the Antarctic region are biologically sustainable. This assessment, part of the State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture (SOFIA) 2026 report,
marks the second consecutive time all Antarctic stocks have been classified as sustainable. The Antarctic krill fishery, managed by the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR), is a focal point due to its role in the Southern Ocean food web. Despite the FAO's positive assessment, concerns remain about the broader ecosystem impact of krill fishing, especially as climate change threatens to reduce krill biomass.
