What's Happening?
Off-duty fire crews in Guernsey are volunteering to collect old Christmas trees to raise funds for the Fire Fighters Charity. The Guernsey Fire and Rescue Service has announced that its members will be using
their own vehicles to collect trees from December 29 to January 9. Last year, the initiative was highly successful, raising nearly £5,000 from the collection of 450 trees over six days. Firefighter Charlie Roger highlighted that the charity supports not only firefighters but also anyone working in fire service roles, including control operators and their families. The funds aid in physical and mental wellbeing, rehabilitation, and workshops for dealing with PTSD. The public can book tree collections through the service's social media pages.
Why It's Important?
This initiative underscores the community spirit and dedication of the Guernsey Fire and Rescue Service members, who are extending their support beyond their regular duties. The funds raised are crucial for the Fire Fighters Charity, which provides comprehensive support to fire service personnel and their families. This includes addressing physical and mental health needs, which are critical given the high-stress nature of firefighting. The charity's work in rehabilitation and PTSD workshops is particularly significant, as it helps ensure the long-term wellbeing of those who serve in these demanding roles. The initiative also fosters community engagement, encouraging public participation in supporting local heroes.
