What's Happening?
The U.S. Air Force has successfully returned a C-17 Globemaster III to service after using a robot to fabricate a replacement part that was unavailable from vendors. The aircraft, assigned to the 445th Airlift Wing at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base,
Ohio, was damaged during a storm in March 2025. Traditional repair methods were stalled due to the unavailability of a specific nose panel. The Air Force Rapid Sustainment Office (RSO) employed incremental sheet forming (ISF) technology to create the part, allowing the aircraft to resume operations in July 2026. This marks the first time an incrementally formed part has been used on an Air Force aircraft.

This development demonstrates the Air Force's ability to innovate and adapt to supply chain limitations, ensuring operational readiness. The use of ISF technology represents a significant advancement in military logistics, potentially reducing downtime for essential aircraft.
