What's Happening?
The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) is initiating a program to offer free well water testing for private well owners as part of its Groundwater Monitoring Network for 2026. This initiative aims to collect data on groundwater quality
across Indiana. The program is voluntary, and a limited number of participants will be selected to have their water tested between June and October 2026. IDEM Commissioner Clint Woods emphasized the importance of this program in providing homeowners with insights into their drinking water quality while contributing to a broader understanding of the state's groundwater conditions. The program encourages regular testing of private wells, which are not regulated by the department or the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Why It's Important?
This initiative is significant as it addresses the need for monitoring groundwater quality, which is crucial for public health and environmental sustainability. By providing free testing, the program helps ensure that private well owners are aware of the quality of their drinking water, potentially identifying contaminants that could pose health risks. The data collected will also help the state monitor and manage groundwater resources more effectively, ensuring they remain safe and resilient for future generations. This program highlights the importance of proactive environmental management and public health protection.
What's Next?
Eligible homeowners interested in participating must reside in Indiana and have an active private residential drinking water well listed in the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Online Water Well Record Database. They can apply online by June 1, 2026. Selected participants will be contacted to arrange sample collection. The results will be shared directly with the homeowners, providing them with valuable information about their water quality.
