What's Happening?
Conexon Connect, the internet service provider arm of fiber builder Conexon, has received a portion of a $9 million BEAD funding award to begin broadband construction in six northern Louisiana parishes. This funding, combined with previous grants, will
enable Conexon to connect approximately 60,000 homes and businesses across 20 parishes. The initiative is part of a broader effort by Louisiana to enhance internet connectivity, with the state signing BEAD grant agreements with multiple providers to connect over 76,000 locations. The project is expected to launch services in Concordia Parish and expand in Webster Parish by the second quarter of 2026.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of broadband infrastructure in Louisiana is crucial for bridging the digital divide, particularly in rural and underserved areas. Enhanced internet connectivity can drive economic growth, improve access to education and healthcare, and support local businesses. The BEAD funding represents a significant investment in the state's digital infrastructure, aligning with national efforts to expand broadband access. This initiative is expected to have a lasting impact on the state's economy and quality of life for its residents.
What's Next?
Conexon plans to continue its expansion efforts, with further developments expected in Union Parish by the third quarter of 2026. As the project progresses, it will likely attract additional investment and interest from other broadband providers. The success of this initiative could serve as a model for similar projects in other states, potentially influencing federal and state policies on broadband expansion.
