According to INTERPOL's African Cyberthreat Assessment Report 2026, artificial intelligence (AI) is now involved in more than half of cybercrime cases across Africa. The report highlights that AI is being used to enhance the scale and sophistication of cyberattacks,
including online scams, which remain the most prevalent form of cybercrime on the continent. The rapid expansion of Africa's digital economy, with over 1.1 billion mobile subscribers, has created new opportunities for cybercriminals. Financial losses from cybercrime have surged, with AI-powered fraud and social engineering attacks contributing significantly to the increase. The report also notes that different regions in Africa face distinct cyber threats, such as mobile money fraud in East Africa and business email compromise in West and Central Africa.
