What's Happening?
In 2007, the U.S. initiated a project to dump 500,000 tons of oyster shells into the Gulf of Mexico to restore damaged marine ecosystems. Initially criticized as ocean dumping, the project aimed to rebuild oyster reefs and coastal habitats. The shells,
collected from seafood restaurants and processing plants, provided a foundation for new oyster reefs. Over nearly two decades, the project has led to a significant recovery in oyster populations, improved water quality, and reduced harmful algal blooms.
