What's Happening?
In Virginia, a new initiative is underway to improve recycling and waste management through the use of artificial intelligence. The Southeastern Public Service Authority (SPSA) has partnered with Commonwealth Sortation, a subsidiary of AMP, to process
waste and recycling materials in the region. This partnership aims to extend the capacity of the regional landfill in Suffolk until 2095, significantly longer than the previously projected 2060. The initiative involves the use of AI technology to sort and repurpose waste, with a goal of achieving a 50% waste diversion rate and a 20% recycling rate, up from the current 7%. The project is expected to create 120 jobs and represents a $200 million investment in capital and equipment.
