The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the U.S. Air Force have developed a modification kit for F-16 fighters, enabling them to switch between human and AI-controlled flight. This initiative, part of the Viper Experimentation and Next-generation
Operations Model (VENOM), allows pilots to toggle control modes with a switch. The VENOM project builds on previous autonomous flight technology tested on the X-62 VISTA, a modified F-16. The program aims to refine AI combat skills and enhance the operational capabilities of standard fighters. Several F-16s have been equipped with VENOM kits, with ongoing tests at Eglin Air Force Base.
