What's Happening?
Every year, approximately 200,000 service members transition from military service to civilian careers, offering a skilled and mission-driven talent pool to employers. Veterans bring a wide range of technical and professional skills from fields such as
logistics, engineering, cybersecurity, aviation, and healthcare, which align closely with civilian roles. Despite their skills, veterans face challenges in translating military experience into civilian job qualifications. To address these challenges, resources like the DAV's 'The Veteran Advantage: DAV’s Hiring Guide for Employers of the Military Community' have been developed. This guide helps employers recruit, hire, and retain veteran and military spouse employees by providing practical information on translating military skills into civilian job qualifications and developing veteran-friendly workplaces.
Why It's Important?
Hiring veterans is crucial for organizations seeking dependable employees who can adapt and lead. Veterans are recognized for their reliability, adaptability, and strong work ethic, qualities that can enhance workplace culture and improve team performance. Employers hiring veterans with disabilities may qualify for federal tax credits, and many workplace accommodations are available at no cost. However, the veteran unemployment rate remains a concern, with a 3.8% rate in March 2026, and 5.4% among veterans with disabilities. Addressing these employment barriers is essential for leveraging the full potential of veterans in the workforce, ensuring they can contribute meaningfully to civilian industries.
What's Next?
Efforts to improve the transition of veterans into civilian careers are ongoing. Organizations like DAV continue to provide resources and support to both employers and veterans. Employers are encouraged to adopt inclusive hiring practices and develop initiatives focused on the military community. As these efforts expand, it is expected that more veterans will find successful employment in civilian roles, reducing unemployment rates and enhancing organizational performance with their unique skills and experiences.
