What's Happening?
St. Mary's County is set to introduce self-service rental kiosks in local parks to make outdoor activities more accessible. The initiative, led by Recreation and Parks Director Ray Bivens, aims to lower the barriers to entry for activities like kayaking,
pickleball, and disc golf by providing equipment rentals through a smartphone app. The first phase will see kiosks installed at Snow Hill Park, Chancellors Run Regional Park, and Lexington Manor Passive Park. The kiosks, operated by Rent.Fun, will allow users to rent equipment, sign waivers, and return items without on-site staff. The county will share rental revenue with Rent.Fun and has ensured liability coverage through user waivers and company insurance.
Why It's Important?
This initiative is significant as it democratizes access to outdoor recreation, encouraging more residents to engage in physical activities without the upfront cost of purchasing equipment. By partnering with Rent.Fun, the county can offer these services without the logistical burden of staffing and maintenance, potentially increasing park usage and community engagement. The program aligns with broader efforts to develop Snow Hill Park as a waterfront destination, enhancing the county's appeal as a recreational hub. The revenue-sharing model also provides a sustainable financial framework for expanding recreational services.
What's Next?
Following the initial rollout, the county plans to evaluate the program's success and consider expanding kiosks to additional locations such as Piney Point Park and Elms Beach Park. The commissioners have unanimously approved the agreement, indicating strong support for the initiative. If successful, this model could serve as a blueprint for other counties looking to enhance public access to recreational activities without significant financial or logistical burdens.
