California has implemented new digital tools to aid in the recovery of Joshua trees following the devastating 2020 Dome Fire, which destroyed approximately 1.3 million trees in the Mojave National Preserve. Scientists from the University of California,
Berkeley, in collaboration with the US National Park Service, have developed software to map fire damage and focus restoration efforts on areas where desert plants are most likely to survive. The software, known as the DSE Disturbance Severity Tool, is designed to work in desert environments, providing park managers with critical data to guide recovery strategies.
