What's Happening?
Japan's traditional Ama divers, known as 'women of the sea', are experiencing a decline in numbers due to changing marine resources and an aging workforce. Historically, these female free divers have relied on breath-holding techniques to harvest seafood
from the seabed without the use of oxygen tanks. The number of active Ama divers has decreased significantly from about 9,100 in 1978 to roughly 2,000 today, with many concentrated in the Shima and Toba areas of the Shima Peninsula. The decline is attributed to younger women opting for other careers and older divers retiring from the physically demanding work. Additionally, changes in marine resources threaten the economic viability of traditional free-diving, impacting both livelihoods and cultural practices associated with Ama diving.
