What's Happening?
HII's Newport News Shipbuilding division is commemorating its 140th anniversary on January 28, 2026. Established on January 28, 1886, by Collis P. Huntington, the shipyard was initially chartered as Chesapeake Dry Dock and Construction Co. and later renamed
Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company. Over the years, the shipyard has delivered more than 800 ships to both commercial and military clients. Currently, it specializes in designing, building, maintaining, refueling, and inactivating nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and submarines for the U.S. Navy. The shipyard spans 550 acres along the James River and employs 26,000 people, making it the largest industrial employer in Virginia. It also operates additional facilities in Norfolk, Virginia, and Goose Creek, South Carolina.
