What's Happening?
Experts from the ASEAN Plus Three (APT) economies are urging governments to prioritize the implementation of existing digital trade frameworks to enhance regional supply chains. During a policy dialogue in the Philippines, participants highlighted the need
to address barriers such as uneven digital readiness, fragmented regulations, and cybersecurity concerns. The ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA) is a focal point, aiming to establish comprehensive regional digital trade systems. The dialogue emphasized the importance of supporting micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in digital adoption to expand their participation in regional value chains.
Why It's Important?
The successful implementation of digital trade policies is critical for ASEAN's economic integration and resilience. By harmonizing legal and technical standards and enhancing digital connectivity, ASEAN can lower transaction costs and improve trade efficiency. This approach not only strengthens regional supply chains but also positions ASEAN as a competitive player in the global digital economy. Supporting MSMEs in digital adoption is particularly important, as it can drive economic growth and innovation across the region.
What's Next?
The recommendations from the dialogue will be considered through the Network of East Asian Think-Tanks (NEAT) process. Key next steps include accelerating the implementation of regional commitments, expanding technical assistance for economies with lower digital readiness, and deepening collaboration on cybersecurity and digital payments. These efforts aim to create a more resilient and inclusive digital economy in ASEAN.
Beyond the Headlines
The push for digital trade policy implementation reflects ASEAN's commitment to leveraging technology for economic growth. However, achieving this goal requires overcoming significant challenges, including regulatory fragmentation and digital skills gaps. By addressing these issues, ASEAN can enhance its economic sovereignty and attract more global investment.
