What's Happening?
Chiropractic care within the U.S. military health system is addressing a wider range of conditions than previously recognized. While back pain remains the primary reason for visits, military chiropractors
are also treating deployment-related injuries, stress-induced headaches, and other musculoskeletal issues. This service has been available since 2001, following congressional approval, and is currently offered at various military installations. The treatment is particularly beneficial for service members who carry heavy gear, sit in cramped positions, and perform repetitive tasks, leading to chronic musculoskeletal conditions. Chiropractic care is a non-pharmacological option that helps reduce reliance on opioids, which is crucial for maintaining duty status, especially in roles like aviation where medication can affect performance.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of chiropractic care in the military is significant as it provides a drug-free alternative for managing pain, which aligns with the Department of Defense's efforts to reduce opioid use. This is particularly important given the high incidence of musculoskeletal injuries among service members, which result in substantial costs and lost duty days. By offering chiropractic care, the military can potentially improve the readiness and overall health of its personnel, reducing the risk of substance use disorders and other complications associated with chronic pain management. The integration of chiropractors into multidisciplinary teams also enhances the quality of care provided to service members.
What's Next?
The 2026 National Defense Authorization Act mandates the reopening of several chiropractic clinics that had closed due to expired contracts. This move is expected to increase access to chiropractic services for active-duty personnel. Additionally, there is a push to integrate military chiropractors into the General Schedule pay system, which could further institutionalize their role within the military health system. Service members are encouraged to inquire about the availability of chiropractic services at their installations, as access may vary.
