What's Happening?
Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, the Chief Adviser's Special Assistant for the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology in Bangladesh, emphasized the need for policy support to reduce the country's
reliance on imported digital devices. Speaking at the Digital Device and Innovation Expo-2026, Taiyeb highlighted the potential for local production to enhance the country's technological self-sufficiency. He noted that successful initiatives have been taken to reduce duties in the battery and mobile phone industries, and called for collaboration between the government and business community to facilitate local computer manufacturing.
Why It's Important?
Reducing import dependency on digital devices is crucial for Bangladesh's economic and technological development. By fostering local production, the country can enhance its technological capabilities, create jobs, and increase government revenue through domestic manufacturing. This shift could also reduce the trade deficit and improve the balance of payments. Additionally, local production can lead to more affordable digital devices for consumers, increasing access to technology and supporting the country's digital transformation goals.
What's Next?
The government and business leaders in Bangladesh are expected to collaborate on policy measures that support local production of digital devices. This may include reducing import duties on components, providing incentives for local manufacturers, and investing in research and development. The success of these initiatives will depend on the ability of entrepreneurs to demonstrate the economic benefits of local production. As the domestic market for digital devices expands, particularly among the youth, there is significant potential for growth in this sector.
