What's Happening?
BAE Systems Hägglunds has placed an order with Saab for the Universal Tank and Anti-Aircraft System (UTAAS) sighting and fire-control system for CV90 infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs). This order, valued at SEK314 million (USD33.6 million), will see the integration
of UTAAS with CV90 MkIIICs for Denmark, Sweden, and Ukraine. Denmark's Ministry of Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organisation, along with BAE Systems, announced a contract for 44 additional CV90 MkIIICs, adding to the 115 ordered in 2024. Sweden has also ordered 50 CV90 MkIIICs, and 40 are financed by Denmark and Sweden for Ukraine.
Why It's Important?
The integration of advanced sighting and fire-control systems into the CV90 vehicles enhances the military capabilities of Denmark, Sweden, and Ukraine, strengthening their defense posture. This development is part of a broader trend of European nations upgrading their military equipment in response to regional security challenges. The collaboration between these countries and BAE Systems reflects a commitment to maintaining a modern and effective defense force. The involvement of multiple nations in this procurement highlights the importance of international cooperation in defense technology.
What's Next?
The delivery of these advanced systems is expected to take place over the next few years, with Denmark's CV90s scheduled for delivery between 2027 and 2030. The integration of UTAAS will likely enhance the operational effectiveness of the CV90s, providing improved targeting and engagement capabilities. As these systems are deployed, they will contribute to the overall defense strategy of the involved nations, potentially influencing future procurement decisions and military collaborations.
