What's Happening?
The UK Squirrel Accord has initiated a survey to evaluate the impact of grey squirrels on woodlands across the UK. Landowners and managers are encouraged to conduct tree damage surveys using the National
Forest's monitoring method. The survey aims to gather data on the bark stripping activities of grey squirrels, which pose a significant threat to young trees and woodland ecosystems. Participants are asked to report their findings by the end of December 2025.
Why It's Important?
Grey squirrels are a major concern for forestry management due to their destructive behavior, which can lead to significant economic losses and ecological damage. The survey will help build a comprehensive understanding of the extent of damage caused by these invasive species, informing management strategies and conservation efforts. Protecting woodlands is crucial for maintaining biodiversity, carbon sequestration, and flood management, making this initiative vital for environmental sustainability.
What's Next?
The results of the survey will be used to develop targeted management plans to mitigate the impact of grey squirrels. This may involve increased efforts in controlling squirrel populations and implementing protective measures for vulnerable tree species. The data collected will also contribute to broader conservation strategies aimed at preserving native wildlife and enhancing the resilience of woodland ecosystems.
