What's Happening?
Portland State University (PSU) has announced an immersive summer program in Paris, France, scheduled for July 5–28, 2027. This faculty-led program, titled 'Exploring the Pedestrian City,' will allow students to study Paris through various academic lenses,
including sociology, anthropology, geography, history, and urban planning. Participants will explore Parisian neighborhoods, examining how identity, belonging, development, displacement, diversity, and social justice shape urban communities. The curriculum will involve walking tours, site visits, field activities, and hands-on projects. Students will visit local markets, parks, housing developments, bike lanes, and iconic landmarks to gain a deeper understanding of urban functions and community evolution. The program offers 8 credits through courses UNST 220 and USP 300U, with additional course options available, and has no prerequisites. It is open to all majors but is particularly beneficial for those interested in urban studies, community development, transportation, and social justice.
Why It's Important?
This program is important for U.S. students as it provides a unique opportunity for international academic and cultural immersion. By studying Paris as a 'classroom,' students can gain a global perspective on urban development, social dynamics, and historical influences, which are increasingly relevant in an interconnected world. The interdisciplinary approach, combining sociology, anthropology, geography, history, and urban planning, offers a comprehensive understanding of complex urban environments. This experience can enhance students' critical thinking skills, cultural awareness, and ability to analyze diverse communities, preparing them for careers in fields such as urban planning, public policy, and international relations. Furthermore, exposure to different urban models and social structures can inform discussions and solutions for similar challenges faced in U.S. cities, fostering a more globally informed generation of professionals.
What's Next?
Prospective students and interested parties can attend an upcoming information session for the 'PSU Faculty-Led: France: Paris: Exploring the Pedestrian City' program. This session will provide detailed insights into the program's curriculum, logistics, and application process. Following the information session, students will likely begin preparing their applications, which may include academic transcripts, essays, and potentially interviews. Once accepted, participants will need to arrange travel logistics, including flights and any necessary visas, in preparation for the July 2027 program start date. The university will also continue to promote the program to ensure a diverse and engaged cohort of students. Faculty involved will finalize course materials and prepare for the immersive educational experience in Paris.
Beyond the Headlines
Beyond the immediate academic benefits, this program signifies a broader trend in higher education towards experiential learning and global engagement. By offering an immersive experience in a major international city like Paris, Portland State University is not only providing academic credits but also fostering personal growth, adaptability, and cross-cultural communication skills. These 'soft skills' are highly valued in today's globalized workforce. The focus on social justice and community development within an urban context also highlights a commitment to addressing contemporary global challenges. Such programs can inspire students to pursue careers with an international dimension, potentially leading to future collaborations between U.S. and European institutions or contributing to global policy discussions on urban sustainability and equity.
