The White House has issued Executive Order 14412, titled 'Securing the Nation Against Advanced Cryptographic Attacks,' which mandates a rapid transition to quantum-resistant encryption across federal agencies, contractors, and critical infrastructure.
This order, issued on June 22, 2026, highlights the threat posed by future large-scale quantum computers to current cryptographic systems. The order sets specific deadlines for federal agencies to appoint a PQC migration lead by late July 2026, complete a NIST-led pilot migration by December 31, 2027, and transition key-establishment protocols and digital signatures to post-quantum cryptography (PQC) by the end of 2030 and 2031, respectively. The order also extends compliance obligations to federal contractors, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive cryptographic inventory and risk assessment to facilitate the transition.
