both food production and forest recovery. The study highlights that local customs, shared labor, and social pressures can effectively regulate land use without formal government enforcement. Slash-and-burn farming, also known as swidden agriculture, involves clearing small areas of forest, burning the vegetation, and using the ash to enrich the soil for crop planting. After a few harvests, the land is left fallow to allow natural regrowth. This method has been practiced for thousands of years across various continents. The study, led by Sean Downey from The Ohio State University, emphasizes the role of community cooperation in limiting forest clearing and maintaining biodiversity.
