What's Happening?
The Kentucky Department of Agriculture has announced the second annual Farm to School Stars Recognition Program, which incentivizes school districts to purchase food directly from local farmers. This initiative aligns with the goals of Senate Bill 5 (SB5),
which provides flexibility for school districts participating in USDA Child Nutrition programs to buy Kentucky-grown agricultural products without adhering to certain state competitive bidding laws. The program awards the top three districts that achieve the highest percentage of local food purchases in their breakfast and lunch programs. The winning districts will receive monetary awards to further support local food purchases in the following school year.
