What's Happening?
Two flights preparing to land at Newark Liberty International Airport reported sightings of a drone. The pilot of United Airlines flight 1513, arriving from Key West, Florida, reported nearly colliding with a drone approximately 100 feet below the aircraft.
A second pilot also confirmed seeing the drone shortly after. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating the incident, as flying drones near airports is both dangerous and illegal.
Why It's Important?
The incident underscores the ongoing safety challenges posed by drones near airports. With the FAA receiving over 100 drone-sighting reports near airports each month, this event highlights the need for stricter enforcement of drone regulations to prevent potential collisions with commercial aircraft. The safety of passengers and crew is at risk, and the aviation industry may push for more robust measures to control unauthorized drone activity in restricted airspace.
