A contractor in his 20s was rushed to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan in critical condition after being electrocuted by a power line in Gurnee, Illinois. The incident occurred around 10:58 a.m. on Tuesday in the 3600 block of Country Club Avenue.
According to Gurnee Fire Department Battalion Chief Tim Steffens, the contractor was performing fiber optic work and was holding an approximately 25-foot-long metal measuring stick when he accidentally made contact with a ComEd primary line, situated about 30 feet in the air. A neighbor initially reported seeing a flash of light and a person down, leading to speculation of a lightning strike, which was later ruled out. Police officers found the victim unconscious and not breathing. Firefighters and paramedics initiated life-saving measures, and the man regained a pulse upon arrival at the hospital, though his long-term prognosis remains uncertain. No power outage was reported, and there was no visible damage to surrounding property. The Gurnee Police Department is investigating the incident.
