Durham Police reported receiving more than 4,000 calls during the festive period, including nearly 300 emergency calls on Christmas Day alone. Between December 24 and 29, the control room staff managed 1,783 emergency 999 calls and 2,269 non-emergency

Earlier in the year, Durham Police had announced that their control room staff answered 91.7% of 999 calls within 10 seconds, meeting national standards. Non-emergency calls were answered in a median time of six seconds, aligning with other forces across the country. This efficiency followed a £1.5 million investment in new technology and additional staff.
Why It's Important?
The ability of Durham Police to handle a high volume of calls efficiently during the festive period highlights the importance of robust emergency response systems. Rapid response times are crucial for public safety, especially during times of increased demand such as holidays. The investment in technology and staffing not only improves service delivery but also sets a benchmark for other police forces aiming to enhance their emergency response capabilities. This development underscores the need for continuous improvement in public service infrastructure to meet the growing demands of the community.
What's Next?
Durham Police may continue to evaluate and improve their emergency response systems to maintain high standards of service. Future investments in technology and staff training could further enhance their ability to manage large volumes of calls efficiently. Other police forces might look to Durham's model as a case study for improving their own systems, potentially leading to nationwide improvements in emergency response times.
Beyond the Headlines
The efficient handling of calls by Durham Police during the festive period may have broader implications for public trust in law enforcement. As police forces demonstrate their capability to respond swiftly and effectively, public confidence in their ability to ensure safety and security may increase.
