An eight-year-old child from Ruston, Louisiana, Lillian Smart, has died after contracting Naegleria fowleri, a rare and almost always fatal brain-eating amoeba. Lillian had been hospitalized since August 15, and her family confirmed her passing on Saturday,
one day after her birthday. The Louisiana Department of Health confirmed on August 19 that a state resident had been infected with Naegleria fowleri, with exposure most likely occurring while swimming in Lake Claiborne in Claiborne parish. Family friends later identified Lillian as the infected resident. Naegleria fowleri infections are extremely rare, with only about 180 cases identified in the U.S. since 1937, and only a handful in Louisiana since 2011. The amoeba thrives in warm freshwater, commonly found in southern states during the summer, and causes a brain infection when contaminated water enters the nose.
