A recent study published in the Nature journal has revealed uranium contamination in breastmilk samples collected from six districts in Bihar, India. The research involved 40 lactating mothers aged between 17 and 35 years, with samples collected from Bhojpur,
Samastipur, Begusarai, Khagaria, Katihar, and Nalanda between October 2021 and July 2024. The study confirmed uranium presence in all samples, with the highest level recorded in Katihar at 5.25 µg/L, described as hazardous. Although the contamination levels were below the World Health Organisation's guideline for uranium in groundwater, the study highlighted the absence of specific permissible limits for uranium in breastmilk, emphasizing the need for public health monitoring.
