What's Happening?
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has taken delivery of a new liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) dual-fuel very large gas carrier (VLGC) named Energia Grandeur. The vessel, built by Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries,
will operate under a time charter contract with TotalEnergies. The dual-fuel capability allows the ship to run on LPG and heavy fuel oil, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 20% and other pollutants by 90% compared to traditional fuel. The vessel is also designed to transport ammonia, enhancing its versatility.
Why It's Important?
The delivery of Energia Grandeur marks a significant advancement in sustainable maritime operations. By utilizing LPG as a fuel, the vessel contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change. This development is crucial for the shipping industry, which faces increasing pressure to adopt cleaner technologies. The vessel's design and capabilities also reflect a growing trend towards multi-fuel ships, which offer flexibility and environmental benefits.
