What's Happening?
The Winnebago Area Literacy Council is organizing an event titled 'The Asian-Latino Borderlands' to explore the often overlooked histories of Asian migrants and Asian-Latino communities at the U.S.-Mexico border. Scheduled for April 22 at the WALC Learning
Center in Oshkosh, the event will feature Dr. Lucero Estrella, who will discuss efforts to preserve these histories through collaborations with communities in northern Mexico and Texas. The event aims to address why these stories are rarely heard and who is responsible for telling them.
Why It's Important?
This event is significant as it seeks to shed light on the complex narratives of migration and cultural exchange at the U.S.-Mexico border, which are often dominated by Latino-centric stories. By focusing on Asian-Latino histories, the event could contribute to a broader understanding of the diverse experiences and challenges faced by migrant communities. It also highlights the importance of preserving cultural histories and fostering cross-cultural collaborations, which can enrich community ties and promote inclusivity.
