Krista Smith of New Middletown and her family's team achieved the highest number of registered walkers, with 90 participants, at the 19th annual Buddy Walk held in Niles. The event, which took place at 7 17 Credit Union Field at Eastwood, saw thousands
gather to support individuals with Down syndrome. Smith's 13-year-old son, Wesley Smith, is the focus of their team's participation. This marks their 14th year taking part in the national advocacy and awareness event. The Buddy Walk is the largest Down syndrome advocacy and awareness event in the region, organized by the Down Syndrome Association of the Valley (DSAV). Participants, many wearing purple shirts, walked a half-mile around the stadium and baseball field, cheered on by others. The event serves as DSAV's largest fundraiser, with proceeds benefiting programs and services for individuals with Down syndrome and their families in Eastern Ohio and Western Pennsylvania.
