What's Happening?
The Root, a prominent website focused on Black American culture and issues, has been acquired by Ashley Allison, a Democratic political strategist and CNN commentator. This marks a return to Black ownership for the first time in years. Allison plans to enhance The Root by investing in video content, forming new partnerships, and creating in-person experiences for its audience. The acquisition is the first for Watering Hole Media, a company founded by Allison. The Root was originally established in 2008 by Henry Louis Gates Jr. and Donald E. Graham and has changed ownership several times, most recently being part of G/O Media.
Why It's Important?
The acquisition of The Root by Ashley Allison signifies a pivotal moment for the publication, as it returns to Black ownership. This move is particularly significant in the current media landscape, where independent journalism is increasingly valued. Allison's plans to expand The Root's offerings could enhance its role as a vital source of news and cultural commentary for Black Americans. By focusing on preserving culture and providing clarity, The Root aims to continue its tradition of storytelling and cultural preservation, potentially influencing public discourse and media representation of Black communities.
