A Finnish study, known as the Helsinki Businessmen Study, has found a significant correlation between five midlife heart-health measures and a longer, healthier life for men. The research tracked 2,690 white Finnish men, born between 1919 and 1934, from
their early 40s into old age, with initial examinations occurring from 1964 to 1973. The five measures assessed were smoking status, body mass index (BMI), systolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, and blood glucose after a glucose drink. Men who exhibited favorable results across all five measures lived an average of 42.7 years after their first exam, nearly 11 years longer than those with no favorable factors, who lived an average of 31.8 years. Furthermore, 41.9% of men with the healthiest profiles lived to age 90, compared to only 6.8% of men with no favorable factors. The study also examined frailty, quality of life, and well-being among survivors, finding that only 2.2% of men with all five favorable midlife factors were frail in old age, compared to 24.5% of men with zero or one favorable factor. These findings suggest that maintaining good cardiovascular health in middle age is linked to both increased longevity and improved physical function later in life.
