What's Happening?
A new AI-powered smart traffic control center has been launched in Malaysia to improve road safety and expedite response times on three major Klang Valley highways: the Sungai Besi Expressway (BESRAYA), New Pantai Expressway (NPE), and Kajang-Seremban
Highway (LEKAS). These highways are managed by IJM Corporation Berhad. Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi stated that 85.4 percent of traffic accidents on tolled expressways last year were due to human factors. The center integrates 144 CCTV cameras, 87 Video Incident Detection System units, 35 Automatic Number Plate Recognition units, and 22 Variable Message Signs (VMS) units. This initiative is part of the Malaysia ITS Roadmap 2030, which aims to transform existing expressways into smart mobility ecosystems. Additionally, a virtual reality (VR) road safety program has been introduced for school students, focusing on promoting safer motorcycle riding habits, as motorcyclists are involved in 80 percent of fatalities.
