What's Happening?
China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (Sinopec) has received approval to develop 235.687 billion cubic meters of shale gas reserves at the Ziyang Dongfeng field in the Sichuan basin, marking China's first ultra-deep shale gas field exceeding 100bcm.
The field, located at depths of 4,500-5,200 meters, taps into the Cambrian Qiongzhusi Formation. Sinopec has utilized advanced methods, integrating AI with geophysical imaging, to overcome exploration challenges. This development is part of Sinopec's Project Deep Earth initiative, aimed at expanding China's shale gas sector. The company has previously developed other significant fields, including Fuling and Weirong, contributing to China's energy security.
