A new World Bank report, 'Advancing Amazonian Conservation through Digital Technologies,' emphasizes the critical role of digital innovation in safeguarding the Amazon rainforest. The report identifies that the Amazon, the world's largest tropical forest,
is facing increasing threats from environmental changes, deforestation, and socio-economic pressures, pushing it towards a tipping point. Digital tools, such as satellite imagery and camera traps, have been instrumental in monitoring deforestation, wildlife, and environmental changes for decades. However, their wider adoption is hindered by high costs, limited technical expertise, and socio-cultural challenges, including complex interfaces and a lack of legal recognition for community-collected data. The report stresses that the full potential of these technologies can only be realized with robust internet connectivity, local capacity building, and strong data governance. Currently, only 3.5% of the Amazon Biome has fixed or mobile broadband coverage, with an even lower rate of 0.69% in Indigenous Territories, due to inconsistent infrastructure, high costs, and geographical barriers.
