A recent study conducted by the University of Toyama in Japan has found a correlation between exclusive breastfeeding and an increased risk of food allergies in children. The research, which utilized data from the Japan Environment and Children’s Study
(JECS), analyzed over 88,000 mother-child pairs. The study categorized infants into four groups based on their feeding methods: exclusively formula-fed, breastfed for less than six months, partially breastfed with formula supplementation, and exclusively breastfed for six months. The findings revealed that children who were exclusively breastfed had a significantly higher risk of developing food allergies, with an 82% increase in the first year, 62% at age two, and 54% at age three. Despite these findings, exclusive breastfeeding was also associated with a lower risk of asthma and allergic rhinoconjunctivitis.
