A new study conducted by Murdoch University researchers, in collaboration with the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD), has uncovered significant issues with the labeling of 'shark' products sold in fish-and-chip shops across
Western Australia. The research, which utilized DNA testing on 167 cooked shark products from 132 establishments between March 2023 and February 2024, found that 56% of products were sold under ambiguous labels such as 'shark,' 'flake,' or 'fish and chips.' Furthermore, 35% of the products were mislabeled, meaning the species advertised did not match the species identified through genetic testing. The study identified 16 different species, including 11 shark species, being sold. Products simply labeled 'shark' contained a variety of species, including dusky, gummy, and whiskery sharks, while those with species-specific names did not always contain the stated species. Only 26% of products provided information about their origin, limiting consumer knowledge about sustainability and provenance. Lead author Dr. Md Robiul Hasan noted that while the findings highlight a lack of transparency, they do not necessarily indicate deliberate deception, suggesting that mislabeling may stem from the complexities of commercial fishing, seafood processing, and supply chains.
