What's Happening?
NBCUniversal Local has initiated its 12th annual Clear The Shelters campaign, a month-long event aimed at promoting pet adoptions and raising funds for animal shelters and rescues. The campaign, which began on August 1, 2026, will run through the end
of the month, while the donation initiative started on July 15 and will continue until September 15. Last year's campaign resulted in over 160,000 pet adoptions and raised more than $628,000, marking the highest fundraising total since 2020. The campaign partners with NBC and Telemundo stations, along with various shelters and rescues, to encourage adoptions and financial support. Since its inception in 2015, Clear The Shelters has facilitated over 1.3 million adoptions and raised more than $5.6 million. This year, Hill’s Pet Nutrition is the presenting sponsor, with other partners including Greater Good Charities and WeRescue.
Why It's Important?
The Clear The Shelters campaign plays a crucial role in addressing the issue of overcrowded animal shelters across the United States. By promoting adoptions and raising funds, the initiative helps alleviate the burden on shelters, ensuring that more animals find permanent homes. The campaign's success in previous years highlights its impact on reducing the number of homeless pets and supporting the financial needs of shelters. This initiative not only benefits the animals but also the communities by fostering a culture of pet adoption and responsible pet ownership. The involvement of major sponsors and media partners amplifies the campaign's reach, encouraging more people to participate and contribute.
What's Next?
As the campaign progresses, participating shelters and rescues will continue to host adoption events and fundraising activities. The campaign's success will depend on public engagement and the ability of shelters to manage increased adoption interest. Shelters and rescues interested in joining the campaign can still register, potentially expanding the initiative's reach. The campaign's conclusion in mid-September will likely be followed by an assessment of its impact, including the number of adoptions and funds raised. The results could influence future campaigns and strategies for addressing pet homelessness.
