What's Happening?
Evgeni Malkin, alternate captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins, has announced the continuation of his 'I'm Score for Kids' initiative for the fourth consecutive season during the 2025-26 campaign. This initiative benefits the Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) of Pittsburgh and Morgantown. Malkin pledges to donate $710 for each regular-season point he scores to RMHC, a commitment he has maintained since the 2022-23 season. Local McDonald's owner/operators have agreed to match Malkin's donations again this season. Last season, Malkin scored 50 points, resulting in a donation of $35,500, which was matched by McDonald's, totaling $71,000. Since the initiative's inception, $302,000 has been donated to RMHC.
Why It's Important?
The 'I'm Score for Kids' initiative significantly impacts the Ronald McDonald House Charities, which provide essential services to families seeking medical care for their children. By donating funds, Malkin helps RMHC offer accommodations, meals, and a supportive environment to families during challenging times. In 2024, RMHC Pittsburgh and Morgantown served nearly 850 families, providing almost 20,000 nights of stay. The initiative not only supports local families but also extends its reach to families from 39 states and eight countries. Malkin's continued involvement highlights the role of athletes in community support and philanthropy, fostering positive social change.
What's Next?
As the 2025-26 season progresses, Malkin aims to increase his scoring to further benefit RMHC. The ongoing partnership with McDonald's ensures that donations will continue to grow, enhancing the charity's ability to serve more families. The initiative may inspire other athletes and organizations to engage in similar philanthropic efforts, potentially expanding support for RMHC and similar charities. The success of 'I'm Score for Kids' could lead to increased visibility and funding for RMHC, allowing them to expand their services and reach.
