What's Happening?
The Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre (GCCEC) has successfully diverted 92.91 tonnes of food organics from landfill through its commercial composting efforts. This initiative is part of GCCEC's broader sustainability strategy, which aims to reduce
carbon emissions and enhance community benefits. The Centre has also been recognized with the EarthCheck Regional Leader status for its waste recycling efforts. The GCCEC's structured waste management program, embedded across all operations, has exceeded key targets in the second year of its five-year environmental strategy. The Centre's achievements include a significant reduction in CO2 emissions and the successful implementation of a 10-cent container recycling program, which has recycled over 150,000 bottles.
Why It's Important?
The GCCEC's achievements highlight the potential for large venues to significantly impact environmental sustainability through structured waste management and recycling programs. By diverting waste from landfills and reducing carbon emissions, the Centre sets a benchmark for other institutions aiming to enhance their sustainability practices. The recognition from EarthCheck further underscores the importance of such initiatives in achieving broader environmental goals. The success of the GCCEC's programs demonstrates the feasibility and benefits of integrating sustainability into operational practices, potentially inspiring similar efforts across various industries.
What's Next?
The GCCEC plans to continue building on its sustainability strategy by implementing ongoing operational improvements, resource efficiency programs, and responsible event delivery initiatives. The Centre aims to further enhance its environmental impact by engaging its team and stakeholders in these efforts. The continued focus on sustainability is expected to yield additional environmental benefits and strengthen the Centre's leadership in sustainable practices.
