What's Happening?
The New York Rangers have announced that they will honor the late Ed Giacomin, a Hockey Hall of Famer, by wearing helmet stickers throughout the season. Giacomin, who passed away on September 15, played 11 of his 13 NHL seasons with the Rangers and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1987. The Rangers retired his No. 1 jersey in 1989. The helmet sticker features a picture of Giacomin's goalie mask with his No. 1 and a red ribbon underneath that says 'Eddie.' The tribute begins with the Rangers' preseason matchup against the Boston Bruins at Madison Square Garden.
Why It's Important?
Ed Giacomin is a significant figure in the history of the New York Rangers, having led the NHL in wins and shutouts during his career and winning the Vezina Trophy in the 1970-71 season. Honoring him with helmet stickers not only pays tribute to his legacy but also serves as a reminder of the impact he had on the team and the sport. This gesture strengthens the bond between the team and its fans, celebrating the history and achievements of past players who have contributed to the team's success.
